IT ALL STARTED WITH...

The collaboration of ideas. Our project team, Devon Murtha, Michelle Nyugen, and I, all wanted to look at our final thesis project of ENDS as an opportunity to confront and question the traditional architectural project philosophies that were expected of us. We wanted to create a project at New Westminter's Front Street Parkade that could actually come to life if chosen to be carried out, which is why we chose to explore Tactical Urbanism.

Instead of trying to implement a new tower or park, we decided it would be more advantageous for New Westminster to start with a bottom-up technique to figure out and use the inherent potential of this modern 'ruin'. The practice of Tactical Urbanism required the designers (us) to give the place making process back to the people of New Westminster (them), and in turn create a dialogue between user and creator rather than a top-down design decision.  

Next, we developed a series of flexible, event based interventions that evolve in scale. From parking-space parklets and weekly outdoor yoga to open-air movie theatres and farmer's markets, people within and outside the community are welcomed to come and explore the endless potentials for this space before making any permanent design decisions.
